37signals Open Bar Single Sign-on now includes Highrise Jul 16

When we launched the 37signals Open Bar a few weeks ago it only supported Basecamp accounts.
That was then, this is now
Now the Open Bar includes your Highrise accounts too. So now you have single sign-on for both Basecamp and Highrise accounts. Log into any one of your accounts and you’re logged into all your accounts.
Access to multiple accounts via a dropdown
We made some changes with this recent push. First, if you have multiple accounts under a single product you’ll see them listed in a dropdown menu when you hover over the product name (see below).
Helpful delay
Second, we added a little delay on hover so the menu doesn’t drop down when you trail over it while reaching for the Back button or any of your browser shortcuts.
Smart bar
Lastly, and most useful, we made Open Bar smarter. Now it remembers the last place you were when you left one account for another. This means when you return to the previous account you were using it will drop you right back where you left off.

It seems that the single sign on breaks a lot of the widgets for Basecamp when you enable it. Are there plans to update the API ’s to support single sign on or is this one of the dilemas?

Funky behavior when you set your Highrise site name to nothing. I set the site names to blank because I just reducing the screen real estate that the name takes up. Anyways, what’s happening is that for Highrise accounts (haven’t tested on Basecamp), it will just display the URL , like so:
https:// .highrisehq.com/session?openid_url=
While that alone would be enough for me, it overflows visible on the dropdown. I suspect the same would apply for Basecamp.
While displaying the URL makes perfect sense, I just thought you should know what it does to the dropdown.

Sam ,just follow the directions under the block where you change to OpenID in Basecamp and everything will work just fine. It explains how to update the tools you use to work once you’ve switched to OpenID.
It says:
Using OpenID with APIs and RSS /iCal Feeds: If you log in with OpenID, and want to use the API , RSS, and iCal feeds, you’ll need to use this username/password in your RSS reader or iCalendar calendar.
(You’d click on the “use this username/password” link to reveal the information you need)

I see a link to my Basecamp accounts from Highrise, but not the other way around. (I’m using free accounts – incase that makes any difference.)

This is so cool. :) I’m using my wordpress.com account as my OpenID—very simple to get working with Basecamp and Highrise. This is definitely worth rolling out across your product line!

I’m a heavy Backpack user. Should I wait until OpenID is rolled out there before signing up for other 37S services to simplify my life?
