Designed: Senz aerodynamic umbrellas Jason Oct 07

The Senz aerodynamic umbrella turns itself to the best position in the wind and won a red dot award for its novel design. Even the shaft was rethought and redesigned (it’s oval, not cylindrical or square). I love reinventions of every day objects that are long taken for granted.

And not that an umbrella matters in a hurricane, but…

Great vid. Simple but gets the point across. Wish they had contrasted it with what happens when a standard umbrella is subjected to those winds. My guess is he’d need those goggles for sure.

Looks like the stealth fighter.

LOL

Stop that umbrella from attacking that man!

Nice idea, and looks good on paper. But not so good when you have it in your hand. Looks goofy when it is folded in to a “stick” and it is not symmetric. And does not fold into a smaller parts.

I wonder how much coverage the abnormal shape gives you when it’s actually raining. I hate small umbrellas because I end up soaked from the shins down.

Super B 07 Oct 08

Actually, the coverage might be better. Since I tend to hold my normal umbrella in one hand, one side is usually more covered than the other. If you angled this umbrella so that the bigger side is over your body, it would give you much better coverage…

I think I saw this umbrella in Batman Returns….

They spelled Sens wrong.

And besides, you lose all the romance.

Original design but at $54 I would rather a decent rain jacket.

@Jason: the Senz umbrellas were invented about two years ago by Dutch students from TU Delft University. Their original website can be found here.

They’re really comfortable, not cheap (but affordable), stylish and great quality. Unfortunately, we still have rain too often.

Unfortunately, we still have rain too often.

Careful what you wish for.

And once you’ve bought that umbrella, how will you know when to bring it?!!

Looks to me like it turns away from the wind—if the wind is blowing face on, one needs more coverage in front, not in back.

Brian Chiasson 08 Oct 08

Keeping its shape in high winds makes for an interesting video, but does it actually keep you dry when it rains during normal conditions?

Sean 08 Oct 08

Since when does wind blow in only one direction? It seems like if a good gust hit you from behind you’d turn into Mary Poppins.

“Even the shaft was rethought and redesigned (it’s oval, not cylindrical or square).”

What’s the benefit of the oval shaft compared to a cylindrical or square shaped one?

Is it just because it looks nice, or is there a functional reason for it too?

Miguel 09 Oct 08

They´ve tested on the smaller side only due to any reason or some one have already spoked with the weatherman up there to know what side is the wind came from???.

Justin Bell 10 Oct 08

Bring it to a bad day in Wellington and we’ll see about its aerodynamic abilities.
