37signals Live debuting tomorrow (Tues) at 3pm CDT Aug 04

Over the years we’ve received hundreds (thousands?) of emails asking us our opinion on this, how we’d do that, what we think of this idea or that idea. People ask about Getting Real, entrepreneurship, business models, hiring, collaboration, design decisions, tech-related stuff, questions about our products, etc.
We also really enjoy the Q&A sessions at the end of our talks whenever we present at a conference or workshop. We always try to leave ample time to answer as many questions as we can. We’ve always believed live Q&A is the best part of any talk (and unfortunately there never seems to be enough time left over at the end to get to everyone’s questions).
So we’ve been thinking: How can we make Q&A more a part of our business? We enjoy it, people seem to get a lot of value from it, so we should do it more often.
We could certainly write more “Ask 37signals” blog entries, but it’s hard to find the time to write ‘em all up. We also seem to give better answers when we talk them through rather than when we write them down.
So we’ve decided to take a page out of Gary Vaynerchuck’s book and do a 37signals Live Q&A session on the web. We don’t know how well it’s going to work, but we’re going to give it a shot.
The first session will be tomorrow (August 5th) at 3pm CDT (what’s that in my time zone?). We’ll plan for an hour but we’ll see how it goes. We’ll have a live video feed and people can ask us questions via a live text chat that’ll run alongside the video.
We’re excited to see what happens. If it works out we’d love to do them on a regular basis. If not, we’ll chalk it up to experience.
So, ask us anything tomorrow at 3! We’ll see you there!

Over 1 million people use 37signals' simple web-based software to collaborate on projects, track contacts, and organize their business with an intranet.

I can’t wait man. This is going to be fantastic.
Big ups to you guys and Gary too for the inspiration.
Dhrumil 04 Aug 08
Jason, are you guys going to use uStream?
JF 04 Aug 08
Yeah, going with Ustream. Quality is so-so, but it works and it’s seriously easy to get started. The important thing is to begin.
Dhrumil 04 Aug 08
Couldn’t agree more.
Andrew Johnson 04 Aug 08
I would love to see this released as an mp3 and eventually presented as a podcast if it becomes regular.
Joga Luce 04 Aug 08
Have to agree with Andrew Johnson, both podcasted and archived would be great.
Mark Holton 04 Aug 08
Very cool. I have a meeting at that time, but hoping I can attend (wish I could TiVo it!)
Ryan Markel 04 Aug 08
This is an awesome idea; I’d like to also request it be archived.
Could it be possible to have one or two in the evening? Those of us who are treated like serfs while at work will regrettably be unable to attend.
Vicky H 05 Aug 08
Great idea!
I’ll be listening tomorrow.
Rick 05 Aug 08
Is this going to be recorded?
I think there are ten times the listeners willing to view what you guys do if they can watch when it is convenient for them.
Jeff 05 Aug 08
Nice—-love it…and props to Gary for inspiring you!
Fabian 05 Aug 08
Fantastic! See you guys tomorrow :)

gregorylent 05 Aug 08
ok, i will check it out from india, have a fast connection, good test of several servers/systems
George 05 Aug 08
Great idea. I felt like I asked a million questions at your Denver presentation, plus I had a million more to ask. Thanks for being receptive to all of us who have some many questions.
All of us at our company were impressed at how down to Earth and real you were to the entire audience, regardless if the question was good or bad.
Thanks for being real!
Pete 05 Aug 08
Yeah would be great if this could be podcasted please. Unfortunately cant make this time but would love to listen if its made available.
Thanks. Great work!
Pavel Pichardo 05 Aug 08
Yay!!! can’t wait!
GeeIWonder 05 Aug 08
Nice. Good luck!
Also, regarding:
We also seem to give better answers when we talk them through rather than when we write them down.
I was wondering if you have any thoughts on why this might be true? Or just further thoughts on that issue itself?

Maybe you can ask us live! ;)
Dhrumil 05 Aug 08
@GeeIWonder
I feel talking on camera live forces you to be in the Now. You don’t focus on self editing, you focus on delivering a message.
You use more “directed thought” and less thinking about past or future.

This is very exciting. We at Ideaworks are setting up in a “conference room” (the old parlor in the historic building we work in) and watch as a group.
The focus of a question that I know I will be asking: Twitter. I’m excited that you guys are using it, and would love to hear some of your insights into the tool

No workie for me in IE or Firefox on Vista.
Damn.
Rob H 05 Aug 08
The Chat doesn’t seem to be working. Anyone else having this problem?
Elliott 05 Aug 08
In the last few seconds it died. Check their twitter…Hope its back soon.
Lisa Rex 05 Aug 08
Thanks for doing the live chat. It was informative – and thanks for answering my question!
Tim 05 Aug 08
Wow, it’s buffering a lot :(
Glen 05 Aug 08
Interesting web cast. I think it would have been just as good with sound only and no video. Unless you think you are going to need a whiteboard to answer a question, I’d can the video.
The sheer volume of off-topic, blatantly inflammatory, or otherwise inappropriate or vapid comments in the “chat” was very distracting. Maybe you could filter that next time.
I was hoping for more technical questions and less about being a startup. You could try separating the two types of questions into two different web casts in the future.
Thanks for sharing! Congrats on 1K viewers!
Mimo 05 Aug 08
Yes it was great. Thanks guys.
Steffen 05 Aug 08
You can’t top that format I guess! Was a great time over at your house. Unfortunately couldn’t see all because of a phone call and a video blackout for a few minutes. So next time with recording, pleeeasse. Thanks for everything!
P.S. Really impressive as no question seem to be too difficult to take for you guys!
Jacques Marneweck 05 Aug 08
Thanks guys for sharing with the community. It would be great to be able to see the video clip of the sessions to see the parts that one missed out due to the ustream.tv streaming issues.
JF 05 Aug 08
That was seriously fun. Thanks to everyone who stopped in to ask a question or just listen.
We learned a lot about what works and what doesn’t. We have some ideas on how to make this better next time around.
Matt 05 Aug 08
Is there any way to get a recorded version?
JF 05 Aug 08
Matt: We didn’t record this version but we may record future versions.
David Waite 05 Aug 08
The chat unfortunately didn’t work (company firewall blocks IRC to make our network less attractive I think)
Matthew Johnson 05 Aug 08
It was great to see you and listen to some great questions and answers. I made the browser window narrower so that I could just watch the video without all the off topic comments. I look forward to the next one! Thanks!
Tractionokc.com 05 Aug 08
Definitely syndicate. Puh-leeeease!
David Smit 06 Aug 08
I missed it :-), please record it in the future.
Ben 06 Aug 08
Hey, thanks for answering all of our questions. I’m confident all the viewers learned something new about 37.
Ivan Torres 06 Aug 08
Thanks for sharing us some of 37signals invaluable knowledge!!! We’ll be looking forward for another QA session. Best!
condor 06 Aug 08
bummed i couldn’t watch it, totally assumed I’d be able to catch the re-run, maybe next time. guessing there isn’t a transcript?
Geert Heremans 06 Aug 08
David and Jason,
Thanks for taking the time to put this together. I really enjoyed watching you!
I’m looking forward to the next session! Would be great if you guys could implement the “vote the question” system if you know what I mean.
Jason, thanks for answering my question on what you would do diffrent if you could start over..
David thanks for your opinion and advice on the diffrent subject at hand. Also thank you for your advice on the best gel to model your hair like an true RoR Developer.
Best regards, Geert
Elliott 06 Aug 08
I enjoyed watching.
For next time:
- No chat. - Question Submission (one per user? to stop flooding) - People can vote up questions (one per user per question)
Its a user suggestion, so I know it wont happen ;) But thanks a lot for your time last night.
Martin Carrion 06 Aug 08
Great session!
I agree with no chat suggestions and screening questions beforehand. I lost connection at my end couple times, so I don’t know if you answer my questions or not and you didn’t record the session, so I look forward to the next session
Best regards,
Martin
BradM 06 Aug 08
DOH ! I can’t believe I missed it! I was away from the computer for the past few days enjoying some (finally) nice weather. See what happens! I guess you got to enjoy life sometimes. And I just submitted a ‘Question’ last week or so too! Damn!
marmel 06 Aug 08
I agree. The chat was full of spamers and russian talking people. Please select the questions beforehand.
Oh, and ustream crashed my Safari two times. Isn’t there some alternative?
Vicky H 06 Aug 08
One suggestion may be to have a Live feed for video or for audio only.
I’m not sure all the specifics behind this, but I bet some people once they got a good look at both of your handsome faces, just listened and minimized the video.
I know I couldn’t see the chat I think something was blocked on my end, I think I saw through your Twitter comments/feedback to @37signals after the show that someone else had this happen. But that’’s an issue on my end.
Great show!
Mr Oz 06 Aug 08
Is it available in quicktime or else?
Jim 06 Aug 08
It was cool. Please Never use ustream again though. That thing is evil. It crashed my browser like 3 times.
Jim 06 Aug 08
Oh and why not use Campfire for the chat next time?
Ryan 06 Aug 08
It was cool… I think (if you guys have the time) it’d be a great thing to keep up with every now and then.
And I agree with Jim, something other than ustream would be great. It was the only thing running on my 2.8GHz iMac, and it crashed safari and firefox a number of times. Of course it’s nothing I can’t deal with, but if possible, an alternative would be awesome.
JF 06 Aug 08
It’s been my experience that an hour+ of flash video will crash almost any browser. It seems to gobble up CPU /RAM and never give it back.
We may try Justin.tv next time and see how that works, but I suspect it’s equally inefficient due to the nature of the technology.
Dave C 06 Aug 08
I had a few dropout sections too. Wish I’d heard the answer to question about replacing subversion (what you’re using in its place, why you chose it etc.)!
I found the big advantage of having video was keeping track of who was talking. Perhaps if the bandwidth req’t is killing things you can find an alternative way to indicate the speaker (aside from saying, “This is Fred!” each time).
I think most people would like to see the rapid repetition of questions (verbally pumping their hands at the ceiling, and audibly whispering, “Pick me, pick me!”), and the troll-talk filtered out on the text side.
Thanks again for doing this. It’s great to hear from people at a successful company.
Eric 07 Aug 08
I’m so bummed I missed this… Will you guys be posting it online?
ep 07 Aug 08
Many thanks for the webcast. Switzerland was closer to Chicago for a while.
I think it is important to ‘re-humanize’ online services whenever it is possible. Nothing will replace body language, facial expressions and voice intonation. I’m a more confident customer since the webcast. Thanks.
My only suggestion for the next session is to maybe work on the props and the wine-cellar décor! :-)
