Help wanted: Looking for a Javascript guru

02 Feb 2005 by Jason Fried

We’re looking for a Javascript guru for a few possible projects. This wouldn’t be a full time gig, but we might be able to keep you busy on a contract/project basis for a good while. It all depends on what you can bring to the table and if you really know your shit.

If you think you’re the guy/gal/both (we’re equal opportunity and all), drop me an email at jason at 37signals dot com. Thanks.

"I know my shit, but I dont know your shit. Maybe we can talk and get this shit worked out"

I'm working on a 2D side scroller using windows bitmaps and IE-6, I can move absolute positioned objects, draw gradients, make interactive web forms, RGB color selectors, etc. Keep in mind that it's slow as hell because it's *javascript* and there are some browser compitibily issues with many of the dynamic content applications. A perfect example would be http://www.angelfire.com/hero/stoneros/ and my only question to you is: why in God's name would you ever want to use javascript?

You're dropping Rails as a development framework and using ASP now? You do mean serverside javascript in ASP3.0 right? ;)

I seem to have taken a liking to javascript recently.... but can it wait till may when I finish school?

If you mean client-side JavaScript, I may be able to help. I write JavaScript articles for http://www.webreference.com/ (part of Jupiter Media, one of the biggest developer networks on the Internet -- in fact, they own internet.com). I've got about 3 and a half years of experience under my belt. What would you need JavaScript for?

To clarify, yes, client-side Javascript.

Although I do know "my shit" when it comes to JavaScript, I'm starting to really hate it and avoid it like the plague. I'm using PHP and other server-side scripting more and more to get rid of compatibility problems with different browsers.

Good lord! NS6 has new javascript support!!! All this time I thought I was limited to the old-timeyness of NS4. I *knew* my shit back in those days. Clearly I don't know my shit anymore. I've been using Firefox for months and had no knowledge of it's javascripting potential. That's for keeping me on my toes, I'll know my shit soon. :D

Balin and Will

What are you on about!?!!?!?

If you know the DOM and use it correctly with Remote Procedure Calls to the server you can create very powerfull interactive / chubby client applications.

Though nothing to do with me, below is a link to a company who have some demos of heavy javascript applications.

http://www.greymagic.com/products/magicbox/demo.shtml

It just shows how much can be done.

Hi Jason,

I am available for short term contract work. I might be out of your price range, but you get what you pay for.

My Bio is found at the URL I provided. Examples of my work are found at that site too.

Have a great weekend,
Bill

Hey, we've got a serious javascript maniac in house with a bit of free time and shortage of really complex stuff to do in javascript (most of our work falls into c# .net stuff)

If you have a good look around www.neo.ie you'll see how into javascript he is ;) It was an experiment a couple of years ago to see how far we could push it.

Lemme know what ya think,

PS.
