Dave Matthews Crap

26 Aug 2004 by Matthew Linderman

The Dave Matthews Band is being sued by the state of Illinois for allegedly dumping up to 800 pounds of liquid human waste from its bus into the Chicago River (and onto a group of people taking a boat tour).

The suit, filed Tuesday, claims that a boat with more than 100 people on an architecture tour was soaked with sewage when the driver emptied the bus’ septic tank through the Kinzie Street bridge’s metal grating into the river.

While we’re at it, can we also sue them for dumping crap onto the radio airwaves of America for the past decade?

I view the act as a way for the band to physically manifest what it was like the day they released their Everyday CD.

Yes, please.

You are lucky it was only my liquid waste...

A first hand account from one of the crew on the boat!

"Today was one of the worst days I've ever had at work. Allow me to explain..."

Gallons of urine poured on my sightseeing boat and passengers today

How long does it take and how many people are required to accumulate 800 pounds of human waste?

First, let's be clear... it was the driver of the tour bus, not them directly. Second, DMB donate enormous sums of money to many good causes, many of which are environmental ones, so obviously this is not condoned by them.

And thirdly, you struck a nerve by calling their music crap. I'll admit that the singles (just about everyone 'cept Ants Marching (the first, years ago) and Crush) are pretty much the worst songs on the respective albums, but that would be the record labels choices on what of their music would be best on Pop radio, and their success on the charts is proof that those do pretty well. If you want a good example of DMB music, get a copy of Bit Torrent and head over to eTree.org for some legal live downloads. If you don't like those, then go buy a Strokes/WhiteStripes/FranzFerdinan/ whatever band sounds just like what's "hot" today album (honestly, that's some of the better sounds-like-everything-else music that's been on the radio recently). Enjoy whatever floats your boat.

What's truly sad though, is that after coming back from two weeks on the road cross the US, there are SO many places for RVs to dump their waste on just the highways (eh hem, legal dumping sites provided at rest stops, etc I mean... not dumping on the tarmac, of course). I was floored by that. I'd imagine a bus would have the same sort of hook ups. I was also floored by the sheer number of the RVs on the road.... unreal. What a waste of petrol...

If you think their music is crap, I would love to know what you think is good music. lol.

And what kind of music was it that you make again?

27 Aug 2004 | Adam Codega said...

They have a song called "Don't drink the water".

Zing.

I heard a local traffic report during rush-hour say that it looked like the Dave Matthews Band was in town. Very funny, albeit a bit of an inside joke.

I'm sorry...that just sounds like it was written by a 14 year old. And doesn't this look a lot like this?

One month, eight persons at least? My conclusion is: They piss better than they play.

Correction:
While were at it, can we also sue them for dumping crap onto the radio airwaves of *the World* for the past decade
My brother likes them thought...

Yesterday a guy I know was telling me about the surreal voyage to New York he won in a Coca-Cola contest (including an hotel at $2000/day, a policeman for personal security, a Jay Leno interview with answers by contract, the recording of a Coca-Cola commercial with "baywatch girls" and much more) and now this. I'll end in the hospital for over-laughing.

Dave Matthews Band apologists?

Who knew such a thing existed.

27 Aug 2004 | Don Schenck said...

The band is cooperating; the driver made the "mistake" (we shall see).

Funny; DMB was the hot item years back. But once they get popular, like most bands or other items of popular culture, once they or it get(s) popular, it become "hip" to hate them. "They sold out", etc etc.

Funny ... and it's nothing new.

maybe they should've put their money into hiring a more environmentally-friendly bus driver.

Don, I have always hated them and the cap wearing closet cases that followed DMB around. So consider me ahead of the curve.

From that Coudal copy that Jos posted...

John Mayer. I apologize for the lack of a more creative title, but in my mind, it doesn't get much more creative. Those two words put together describe the single greatest gift of music God has decided to grant my ears in my short life time

Uh huh.

Hmmm...where to go with this one?

"What a shitty deal."

"That kind of stuff pisses me off."

"They're going to sue the crap out of him!"

*Inset Najeh Davenport joke here*

For the record, I enjoy Dave and DMB. If that makes me have bad taste in music, so be it. And while this certainly was a lame thing to do, it wasn't the band itself that did it, so I'm not going to hold it against them. Who hasn't had an idiot employee working for the in the past?

I am so suprerior because I condescend other's choice in music!

27 Aug 2004 | Don Schenck said...

No Darrel, *I* am superior because I analyze others' condescending opinions.

That, and I can actually spell s-u-p-e-r-i-o-r.

I'd have to say the band consists of several talented musicians led by a terrible singer. (Possibly the band only seems talented relative to the singing.)

27 Aug 2004 | Jeff Croft said...

Carter Beauford, the drummer, is extrodinarly talented. Stefan Lessard, the bassist, is definitly above average for a rock band bassist. Boyd (violin) and LeRoi (saxophone) are pretty average. Dave himself is a very, very good rhythym guitarist and songwriter. His is a good, but not great, singer and his mumbling bumbling style is definitley not for everyone.

Carter Beauford is so damn good, though, that I'd happily listen to him play quarter notes on his snare all day long.

MH: I didn't post the Coudal copy.
Don: I think lots of people never liked DMB that much. I know I didn't, it's not my kind of music -- but I can be eclectic most of the times.
However, I hate the Rolling Stones guts (that and Portishead)! He, he.

my poop's better than your poop, and the same goes for my taste in poop.

That being said, the bands Okkervil River and Oneida truly rock.

The DMB diss is an unsupportable cheap shot. Clearly DMB has been popular among somewhat discerning music types for the last decade. As was previously noted, the band is talented.

Anyone who uses this all too popular platform to make condescending remarks about musical taste and somehow thinks that the act of being "different" makes one intellectually superior is just as guilty of following the mob as those that listen to the radio, just a different mob. If you have any evidence that suggests that musical quality can be derived from anything that isnt subjective feel free to fill me in. But I find that judging a songs quality by its unpopularity is just as bad as judging it by its popularity.

This isn't Fark.

I found this post to be in poor taste, given the context of this site and under the circumstances some of the back and forth flaming going on should be a big indication of what this kind of tone promotes.

Very disapointed.

I don't know about you, but I'd be elated to get doused with crap by DMB. Think of all the money you could make on eBay selling your clothes.

kidding of course.

Actually, were they even on the bus when this happened? I was at the DMB concert the night before in Alpine Valley and they had another show the night this happened....2 hours away and the concert started at 6pm. Didn't this happen late afternoon? We need some charts and diagrams to illustrate this.

If DMB didn't drop the s***, you must acquit.

I honestly think thats almost every single one of you need to get your facts straight. How old are you? It seems as tho you just bickered back and forth for the hell of it. Why don't you pick up a cd and actually LISTEN to their music. Don't just say that they're horrible because "It's the cool thing to do" wow.. such leaders let me tell you. "I hate DMB because everyone else hates it" It sickens me to think that people can't just say hey they like DMB good for them, they get some sort of kick out of putting others down. wow...
