Basecamp: Private Launch Coming Soon

22 Jan 2004 by Jason Fried

Basecamp will be launching very soon. We’ve decided we’ll be launching in two phases: 1. A private launch and 2. A public launch. The private launch will take place about a week or so prior to the public launch. The private launch will be open to a few hundred randomly chosen people (plus the beta testers and a few hand picked others). We’ll choose the bulk of the people from the Basecamp mailing list, so if you want to improve your chances to be one of the first to use Basecamp, visit the teaser page and sign up for the mailing list. Hope to see you there.

Hmmm...I could care less...

If I act like I don't want to be picked, will that entice you to pick me?

What is the percentage of people do you think who still say "could care less"? It seems like the proper "couldn't care less" has been hammered into us but still doesn't seem to get the usage you'd expect.

Frankly, pb, I could care less.

I'm on the mailing list and would like to take part but I was just wondering about privacy and security issues regarding information that we may store on your basecamp server. Are there guarantees that project data will be private?

cheers.

I've been thinking and I have a couple questions.

Is there a way to associate tasks with a given milestone?

For example, I'm wondering if I could see a list of incomplete tasks that are required before a site launches, or the mock-ups are sent to production.

Along those same lines, is there a way to associate posts to a specific task? Or are posts analagous to a weblog that's associated with a given project (i.e. on project, one blog)?

Likewise, is there a way to view recent activity across all projects and posts by client? For example, I'm ABC, Inc., and we have five concurrent projects running with this design studio. Can I get a list of activity for the last week for all of my projects in one place?

It's easy. Just set up a to-do list for "unfinished tasks" and add all the remaining items to that list. When you complete one, just check it out. You can even create multiple "unfinished tasks" lists like "unfinished copywriting" "unfinished design stuff" "unfinished legal" etc.

You can associate a post with a milestone, but not a to-do list. Yet, at least.

You can review some types of recent activity from the projects dashboard, but you can't run reports
