Clinton III

29 May 2003 by

Can you believe the balls on this Clinton guy? Is there larger ego on the planet? And, in equally loony news, a woman in Florida wants to keep her veil on for her driver’s license photo. Have at it.

8 years is enough presidency for anyone. Some presidents barely deserve 1.

I'm not sure how I feel about the Muslim woman. My gut instinct is to agree that showing her face would violate her religous freedom. On the other hand, I agree that public saftey is at stake. Maybe we need new rules for new times?

Maybe this is a naive question, but why do we need photographic identification to drive a car?

It's interesting that in the world's largest Muslim country, Indonesia, everyone needs to take a full-face photo. That includes women. Do you think that Indonesia is discriminating against Muslims by forcing them to show their whole face when taking an official identification photograph?

29 May 2003 | Darrel said...

I read that entire article and saw no mention of his testicles. Did I miss something?

Not sure what I think about the more than two terms for president idea. We seem to let other representative positions go on forever, why do we limit the president?

but why do we need photographic identification to drive a car?

You'd think they'd want the veil to stay on. That way cops could more easily recognize her as a terrorist. ;o)

The fact is that we require photo IDs in this country if you want a legitimate ID. So, if she wants a legitimate ID in the US, then she needs to oblige the requirements.

Indonesia is a different country with different laws and values. It's hard to compare the two situations without having lived in both countries.

I don't see the big deal, Clinton doesn't need balls to say what he said. If you ignore the messenger, the message actually makes a lot of sense. Maybe it should be "no more than 2 consecutive, no more than 4 total terms." He's right, people are living a long time now a days. What we really need isn't changes in the term limits, though, what we need is a change in the voting to instant runoff/ preferential-style voting, so we can actually elect who we want in the damn office, but that's for another discussion.

29 May 2003 | Anil said...

I love Bill Clinton, and of course he has balls. That's part of what it takes to be a great leader and one hell of a compelling celebrity personality. He's fun!

Regarding wearing veils on drivers' licenses, it seems clear that we need not just a separation of church and state, but a zero-tolerance policy for religion when it comes to anything have to do with matters of public policy or government functions. She should have to take the veil off, and there ought not be a day off on December 25th.

29 May 2003 | Brandon said...

He's right, people are living a long time now a days.

This is justification for changing the Constitution to allow an individual to serve up to 2 more terms after they've already served 2? Are we running out of people? Was this the reason why the 2-term-limit amendment was put in place? Because people weren't living long enough to run again? If anything this is insulting to future generations. "Hey future generations... You'll never produce someone as great as me and hey... since I'm living longer I should get a second change."

Give me a break.

30 May 2003 | jupiter said...

It's not a matter of running out of people. As you guys do not vote for the person who fits best for the office and has the strongest political and intellectual abilities, but the one who makes the most fantastic promises, Clinton is probably the only one to compete.

Don't want to insult anyone - it's the same thing here in Germany: people didn't get it after 4 bad years that they were fooled and voted for the same guy again.

Shes prepetuating a false interpretation of Islam. Women like her are extremists in my eyes. They cry out that (under these false interpretations) women are treated like "queens". Bullshit. No where in the original documents of the Quran does it say that women should hide thier faces and bodies. It simply says they "should dress with modesty". What "modest" means is left up to the reader.

30 May 2003 | Mixm said...

Hey this is great! If she can pull this one off, all her female friends can SHARE her driving license since everyone with a veil on kind of looks the same. In this way the muslim community can save a lot of money!

30 May 2003 | siebenviertel said...

so let me think about this for a second. billy boy clinton mentions he'd like a third term in the oval office (okay, he stopped short of actually saying it) and the masses scream and yell that would be so darn horrible.

but why?

personally, I prefer someone asking a chubby girl to perform fellatio on him from a cowboy who tends to insult, offend and/or bomb every nation he can find on a map.

having that said, I begin to wonder what helen thomas is going to do once her favourite punching ball ari fleischer takes off?

30 May 2003 | Toby said...

I think the point was that even in Islamic countries -- even those that practice fundamentalist Islam like Iran -- driver's licenses require a full picture.

Except in Saudia Arabia. There women are forbidden to drive.

The Florida woman is absurd and this shouldn't even be an issue.

30 May 2003 | Napoo said...

Clinton sure looks different with a veil on.

30 May 2003 | * said...

I think I have a solution. How about one of those photos where you tilt it one way, you see the burqa. Tilt it the other, you see her face.

30 May 2003 | Don Schenck said...

RE: Clinton

I agree with him.

RE: Veiling and a license

I don't even agree with a "license" to operate a car in the first place, but if we are going to have such laws, then she must comply. Otherwise, no license for you!

Oh ... and Where Are The WMD's?

30 May 2003 | Darrel said...

What is Brandon talking about?

I'm not for nor against longer presidential terms. I just wonder why the presidential position is limited while senators and congressfolk (and judges) don't have the same 2-term restriction.

I also believe that the term limit, if we keep one, should be family-based. Ie, only two terms per immediate family. (No more GW, and Hillary, sorry, Bill took your turn.)

30 May 2003 | Don Schenck said...

Darrel, you are kidding, right?

How about a "Year Of Jubilee" every, say, 12 or 16 years, where all officials in office are forced to leave and cannot return for four years? That'll clean things out.

Hmmmm ... and how about "If you were on a ballot on the past four years, you can't run" added to my Jubilee idea?

Where Are The WMD's?

30 May 2003 | p8 said...

"Where Are The WMD's?"

In a field in Maryland?

30 May 2003 | fajalar said...

Funny link p8.

I think Clinton is right. The people will see someone as an effective leader (true or not) and want that person to come back. It feeds into the hero coming back at the greatest time of need, and our incesent interest in being governed by fewer and fewer people.

I find it strange that once we see someone do something "right," only that person is capable to doing it. I really doubt Clinton wants to be prez again, but he does have a decent ability to see trends stretch into the future.

Secretly, all americans desire to be ruled. (vote for me in 2008!)

30 May 2003 | fajalar said...

I forgot to add that I would prefer presidents be able to serve three, 3-year terms. That way if the prez isn't great, it's one less year of listening to them, but if they do well, they get an extra year (potentially) to accomplish their agenda.

Sort of analagous (sp?) to the shortened NBA season a couple of years ago. You got to see players actually hustle. Not the greatest analogy, but it's been a long week.

30 May 2003 | alisha said...

30 May 2003 | MrAnonymous said...

Personally, I like to see a change in the presidency. Even if the current one is doing a good job. If you have a president like FDR, who was elected four times, what's the point of even having elections? I'm a huge Bush supporter, but I want to see someone new in 2008. Of course many others would like to see someone new in 2004. There are enough people out there to run for president. I can't see any valid reason to make Clinton's proposed change.

30 May 2003 | alisha said...

not to be ruled - to be guest poster.
although, Im sure your little daughter does a good job of ruling you :-)

30 May 2003 | Darrel said...

Darrel, you are kidding, right?

About the family thing? Yea. Sorta. Well, maybe not. It has its merits. ;o)

The term limit? No. I really don't understand why presidents have a different restriction than other elected officials.

And WOW! That Saddam was clever. Hiding the WMD right here in the US! Gotta give him credit for that plan!

Fajaler:

I believe some countries, like Canada, can vote a leader out at will...can't they? (Someone enlighten me on that...)

30 May 2003 | Hagbard Celine said...

My opinions - limit all elected federal officials to a single six-year term. No more of this using half your term to run for your next term crap. You've been a senator for six years? Go back to being a corporate big wig - spread the bribe money around a little.

Driving in the U.S. has been established as a privilege, not a right. If you don't want to follow the same rules as everyone else, there is no requirement that you get a drivers license. Take the bus.

It offends my irreligious sensibilities to pay parking tickets. However, if I didn't, eventually my vehicle would be impounded and/or my driving privileges revoked. I choose a little offense over the potential inconveniences.

Don,

Licensing drivers allows us to revoke the driving privileges of those who are not responsible enough to do it properly. So if your neighbor runs into 6 six trees drunk, we can attempt to keep him off the road, so the next thing he wraps his car around isn't your daughter.

I have no idea if you have a daughter, but anyhow... that's all.

Re: presidential term limits. The original amendment was enacted in a fit of Republican pique following the death of FDR. I'm against term limits in all forms, and I'm against them with regard to the president. I personall think it was a good thing for the country that FDR was elected as many times as he was, and we could easily hit a stage in history where we'd want to do something like that again. I believe people have a right to elect whomever they want, as often as they want.

Re: the veil. Even in ultraconservative Muslim societies (e.g. Saudi Arabia), the women are required to have their faces uncovered for their ID card photographs. The state is taking reasonable steps to accomodate her - emptying the office of people and having only women do the photographing and processing. That strikes me as enough. No one has a right to drive, so being expected to jump through a few hoops is part of the deal.

Incidentally, comparing her situation to Indonesia doesn't quite work. Indonesia's fairly liberal culturally as far as Muslim countries go - no restrictions on women driving, working, etc.; it's similar to Turkey - but she belongs to a very conservative sect, similar to the one that prevails in Saudi Arabia. Of course, women have to be unveiled for ID photos there too, so she's losing legs to stand on.

02 Jun 2003 | Ben Langhinrichs said...

I think the interesting thing is that Clinton would propose this now, when Bush might be the one we can't get rid of after two terms. I would much prefer Clinton back in office, but I would rather not take the risk. Leave it at two terms.

As for veils, the problem is that if she is going to wear the veil the whole time, she won't be identified anyway by the driver's license picture. While I think it is OK for the government to insist on a full face picture for everyone if they have a valid reason, I am not sure what the valid reason is in this case.

Can we change the term limit AFTER Nader becomes president?

03 Jun 2003 | Steve said...

Interesting links, p8. Fits with teh pattern the Bush administration used of finding whatever cause du jour to justify the war. Remember, Bush himself had half a dozen different justifications that shifted and ebbed and flowed depending on the hot issue fo the day and increasing skepticism of any one point of view.

The fact that the war was planned right after September 11 is old news, actually. Rumsfeld ordered a preparation of plans that day. And remember that many of the key people in the administration - Rumsfled, Cheney, Wolfowitz - have been advocating war with Iraq for the last half-dozen years. Hell, I'll even give Wolfowitz points for the fact that he's a true believer here: he was speaking out against Saddam back when he was an "ally."

The administration is finding itself with fewer and fewer legs to stand on with justifying this war. I'm as glad as anyone to see Hussein gone, but it's time for people to speak up and say the reasons for going to war were a sham, and we're screwing up the aftermath so far. I'd have a lot more respect for the Bush administration if they'd just admit the realpolitik behind the war instead of trying to candy-coat it with various excuses. That I would be able to buy, and maybe even back in a way. All the other stuff - terrorist links that don't exist, WMDs that may not exist, etc. - is so much bullshit and fits into a Big Lie pattern that is pretty firmly entrenched in this administration.

03 Jun 2003 | Don Schenck said...

I have a friend who was at the meeting, and many others.

They plan MANY, MANY wars. Plans does not necessarily equal implementation.

That said: Where Are The WMD's?

03 Jun 2003 | p8 said...

Woah, Don which wars did your friend Don R. tell you they were planning? Are we (the netherlands) going to be attacked soon?
Maybe you should ask your friend where the WMD's are. ;)

04 Jun 2003 | p8 said...

Don, was your friend also at this meeting?

New questions about U.S. intelligence regarding Iraq's weapons of mass terror:
"On the evening of February 1, two dozen American officials gathered in a spacious conference room at the Central Intelligence Agency in Langley, Va. The time had come to make the public case for war against Iraq. For six hours that Saturday, the men and women of the Bush administration argued about what Secretary of State Colin Powell should--and should not--say at the United Nations Security Council four days later. Not all the secret intelligence about Saddam Hussein's misdeeds, they found, stood up to close scrutiny. At one point during the rehearsal, Powell tossed several pages in the air. "I'm not reading this," he declared. "This is bulls- - -"

I think the interesting thing is that Clinton would propose this now, when Bush might be the one we can't get rid of after two terms. I would much prefer Clinton back in office, but I would rather not take the risk. Leave it at two terms.

I think Clinton is right. The people will see someone as an effective leader (true or not) and want that person to come back. It feeds into the hero coming back at the greatest time of need, and our incesent interest in being governed by fewer and fewer people.
